About the Event
The panel event explored the spread and prevalence of legal advice deserts and the geographic and systemic challenges driving access gaps across the UK, highlighting sharp reductions in community care, education, housing, immigration, welfare and family provision, and the acute impact on rural and coastal areas.
Speakers discussed the collapse in provider capacity, the rise of advice deserts and droughts, the mismatch between supply and demand created by dispersal policies, and the consequences for vulnerable people facing homelessness, domestic abuse, discrimination or complex legal systems.
The session concluded that emphasising that pro bono work helps bridge gaps but cannot replace a properly funded, sustainable legal aid system.
